Knowing how to read a German wine label, reveals a lot of information about the wines. German wine labels are probably the most informative wine labels in the world. If you know how to read the label, you will get an excellent idea of the weight or body of the wine according to harvest categories and the way it was vinified (dry, half-dry or sweet).
Here we use one German wine label as an example to share with you the meaning of each item.
1 = grower, producer
2 = vintage year
3 = village
4 = vineyard
5 = grape variety
6 = quality level of wine
7 = taste or style of the wine
In this case, it is not marked. When not labeled, it is sweet (lieblich). For other cases can be dry (troken) or
half-dry (halbtroken).
8 = quality level of the wine
9 = official tasting number
10 = estate produced and bottled
11 = wine region (1 of 13)
12 = bottle size in liter
13 = alcoholic strength
14 = name, address of producer/bottler
15 = subgrowing region
